A Place For My Stuff (h/t George Carlin)
I use this place to collect stuff that interests me. This includes web sites, quotes, thoughts, and various other, well, stuff.
While 42 is the answer to the ultimate question, nothing here should be construed as an actual answer to anything.

Death by ITIL: How IT departments streamline themselves into oblivion | IT Leadership | TechRepublic.com
Death by ITIL: How IT departments streamline themselves into oblivion IT Leadership TechRepublic.com: "It strikes me that many if not most departments fall victim to the same kind of fascination, when it comes to various frameworks and methodologies du jour. CMM and CMMI, PMBoK or Prince 2, ITIL and COBiT, Agile (I cannot bring myself to listing its gazillion flavors), TQM and Lean, Six Sigma, RUP, and all that crackle and pop ad infinitum. If you have been in this profession long enough, you know that every few years a new fad diet comes along."

Ray Ozzie's view from the clouds | CNET News
An interesting interview. If he can pull off his vision, Microsoft will be a seriously player for a long time.
Ray Ozzie's view from the clouds Beyond Binary - CNET News:
"When Ray Ozzie penned his Internet Services Disruption memo back in 2005, he had a pretty good idea where the computing world was going. He just didn't know how Microsoft was going to get there. While many are ready to write off Microsoft as an declining icon of computing's last generation, Ozzie sees Microsoft positioned to leapfrog some of the companies that tend to be thought of as the leaders of the cloud computing world--names like Amazon, Salesforce and Google."

CleverWorkarounds » SQL God? No… I just know how to do a maintenance plan: "A SQL Server without a maintenance plan is like the band Queen without Freddie Mercury. Sure it will keep going, but it will provide a sub-optimal user experience."

Millennials + Enterprise Software: Doomed to Fail | CIO - Blogs and Discussion
Millennials + Enterprise Software: Doomed to Fail CIO - Blogs and Discussion: "According to Schooley, 76 million Millennials were born between 1980 and 2000 (scary, I know) and are now infiltrating corporations everywhere—approximately 40 million already have, with an additional 35 million getting ready. 'They bring sharp technology skills, a desire for challenging work, flexibility, mobility and an ability to work well in teams,' writes Schooley. However, she adds, 'These new employees often meet a seasoned workforce that has very different work styles.'
When it comes to enterprise software today, just take out the word 'workforce' in that last sentence and insert 'application suite.' This unfortunate situation is going to be one of biggest challenges for old-school businesses with tons of legacy software and infrastructure. (Of course, it should help that the tech workers are going to be Millennials, too.)"

Introducing the Google Chrome OS
Official Google Blog: Introducing the Google Chrome OS: "Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve."

SharePoint Worst Practices: 5 Common Mistakes to Avoid
Categories: SharePoint, Business
In my post 'Mr. Miyagi is Not a Direct Descendant of Superman' I mentioned that along with my colleague Mike Taylor, we presented: 'SharePoint Worst Practices: Five Common Mistakes to Avoid' at the recently concluded SharePoint Technology Conference in Cambridge, MA.
We explored common mistakes organizations commit when deploying SharePoint, namely:
1. Lack of Proper Planning
2. Showcase Features, not Building Solutions
3. Undefined Business Case
4. Poor Understanding of SharePoint
5. Unrealistic Staffing
More importantly, we discussed key strategies and techniques on how to avoid these mistakes. Want to learn more? Click here to download the slide decks.
Also, here's the 65 minute screencast that I recorded from our presentation. Enjoy!"

It’s easy to tell when a youth baseball team is struggling: they fall silent. If the silence persists for any length of time, the coach (or a parent in the stands) will yell out, “Let’s hear a little chatter out there!” This request hopefully refocuses the team as they start talking again."

Whose Fault? Yours. « The Effective CIO
Whose Fault? Yours. « The Effective CIO: "When people fail to get their jobs done as quickly and efficiently as possible, it’s our fault. Period. It doesn’t matter why they failed; we still own the problem. That’s a hard concept for some people in IT to grasp and accept."
